Mount Rinjani is the most active volcano in Lombok with a height 3726 m, and the second highest volcano in Indonesia, second only to Gunung Kerinci in Sumatra, Lombok Rinjani dominates the landscape which is relatively small.
At Peak Mount Rinjani there is a lake called the lake Segara Anak (Anak Laut), a small letuan Caldera has formed a new small cone called mount Baru (Gunung Baru).
This mountain is part of Mount Rinjani National Park which covers approximately 41,330 ha and is now being proposed to increase the extent that it becomes 76,000 ha to the west and east.
The Indonesian government propose to UNESCO that Mount Rinjani become one of the official world geoparks in 2008. Gunung Rinjani would become like the first geological park in Indonesia, if it is approved by UNESCO.
Mount Rinjani is very active volcano, first recorded eruption in 1847, because this place is very remote so less recorded activity. in the year 1994-1995 was a very active volcano which resulted the appearance of Gunung Baru crater cone. after it changed its name to Gunung Barujari (Gunung Jari).
Gunung Barujari active again on April 27, 2009-May 2009 which resulted closure of climbing routes, because of the cloud of smoke and ash as high as 8000 m. But on 14 September 2009 climbing routes have been opened, except the route hiking into the crater lake because it is still not safe.
In February 2010 the mountain Barujari has increased very intensive activity that resulted should not be doing any activities in a radius of 4 km from the eruption of Mount Barujadi.
At the foot of Mount Rinjani until the middle of quite dense forested mountains. Above the forest limit is barren slopes, rugged and volcanic rocks. The view in the crater lake is very nice and see the sunrise. At the Summit Mount Rinjani could see Sumbawa to the east and in the west Bali.
Flora and fauna
At the foot of Mount Rinjani and in the middle of the mountain there is dense forest with typical tropical spesie. There are also types of green hanging parrot and Kakatua. not easy to see this bird because of thick forest. here looks too gray monkey long tail (monkey temple in Bali), black long-tailed monkey, the deer and muntjacs.
To climb Mount Rinjani is best in April-November dry season. Climb during the rainy season can also be done, but the treks are often reversed in a short time when heavy rains. When it gets above a height of 2000 m sure there’s freezing conditions, make sure wear warm clothing.
Mount Rinjani, How to Get There?

Climbing Mount Rinjani
At 3,726 metres, Mount Rinjani is the second highest mountain in Indonesia outside of Papua. It is very climbable by visitors with a high level of physical fitness. Few actually make the very strenuous effort required to reach the actual summit but instead stop at the crater rim (approx 2,700 m) where the views of the crater lake are mind blowing. To make the extra 1,000 metre ascent to the very top requires a considerably higher level of fitness, not to mention strength of spirit and sense of adventure.
Typically, a trek to the crater rim involves two days and one night on Mount Rinjani. The longer ascent to the summit can be done with just one night’s camping but is often part of a longer trek of 3-4 days and two or three nights.
Mount Rinjani height is 3726 m and this is the 2nd highest mountain in Indonesia, so when climbing this mountain visitors should have physical fitness and good stamina. The Senaru Ascent Route
This route is the most widely used, because it is less difficult to climb to the edge of the crater, you start at Senaru village at an altitude of 600m. Usually ascent began in the afternoon or evening. for till the edge of the crater before dark (at 6). The route past the Post 2 at an altitude of 1,500 m, through the trees until the post 3 at a height of 2,000 m.. To get to the bottom edge of the crater 2.600m must pass through gravel road. camping here, then get up before dawn and walk 20-30 minutes to get to the edge of the crater, then watch the sunrise and see the Segara Anak display icons for a new mountain.
You also can bathe in warm water here, but should decline as high steep cliff more than 600m with handrails and straps.
To return to Senaru, just like when you come here.
To get to Pelawangan 2, preferably via a route Sambulan Lawang, is not recommended through route Senaru.
The Sambulan Lawang Ascent Route
Climbing through this route starts from the track center in the village of Lawang Sambulan in the morning, then headed to Plawangan 2 at a height of 2.638m, will take about 8 hours. First you are going through Heading 1 in the altitude of 1.300m, 2nd got Pos2 at altitude 1,500 m, and the 3rd until the pos3 at an altitude of 1.800m, and camping and at 3:00 the next day went to the meeting.
